The Gun Came First

The airplane came second.

Most aircraft are designed, then armed. The A-10 Thunderbolt II was built the other way around. The gun existed first: a thirty millimeter, seven barrel cannon nearly twenty feet long, so large that Fairchild Republic's engineers shaped the entire airplane around it. The barrels run beneath the pilot's seat. The ammunition drum rides at his back. The nose wheel sits off center because the gun claimed the centerline, and the finished airplane turns a little wider to the right than to the left. The flight manual says so itself.

Nothing about it was glamorous. It was slow, it was plain, and the Air Force spent decades trying to retire it. It kept flying anyway, because it was built for one job and did it better than anything else in the sky: stay low, stay close, and bring the people on the ground home. Its official name honors a World War II fighter. Almost nobody uses it. The soldiers it covered gave it their own name, and that one stuck.

What it stands for:

  • The tool built around the task
  • Keeping faith with the people on the ground
  • Purpose over polish

Every number on this shirt is real. Look them up.
